What does it mean to be a man in the age of innovation? It's not just strength, but wisdom, connection and adaptability. So, as technology continues to shape our society on greater and greater scales, literally every day, not only does humanity as a whole, society as a whole civilization need to adapt as we incorporate things accelerating, having more access to information, learning more, having collective human wisdom accessible to us on our smartphones, for example we all have to adapt, and that includes the masculine. You know on this channel that that's something I'm very passionate about and is very close and near and dear to my heart. So we have to redefine masculinity. It isn't that masculinity itself changes, it's that we have to understand where it fits and where we as men fit into modern society. It's an interesting topic because for generations and generations, perhaps most of human recorded history, what it's meant, has changed very little. We're hunters and gatherers and defenders of our tribes and our people and our villages, and warriors and leaders, and those practices have taken different forms and different cultures, but fundamentally it's very similar for a very, very long time. What does that look like now? What does that look like in an age where we and people ourselves are not the source of collective wisdom. But technology is. Where do we fit into that? Where does the masculine find its place?
Speaker 1:The truth is, a lot of technologies are just simply more conducive to the feminine and less conducive to the masculine. We've seen that since the birth of the Internet. We've seen that since the birth of the internet, we've seen men take huge hits from passive activity like playing video games too much and social media and being addicted to pornography and staring at our phones when we should be leading and connecting to the other men and women in our lives and our families and our communities. This is a double whammy, of course, for the masculine, because when we don't go outside, when we don't live and learn by trial and error, when we're not trying things, learning lessons, making ourselves less comfortable for the sake of becoming better men, and instead we sit on a couch opposite from our wife with a movie playing on our television, scrolling through social media, we begin to fall apart. We lose our place in community. We lose our place as leaders, providers and protectors because, frankly, life can become too easy and because there's a machine out there that would like nothing more than for men to become as passive as humanly possible If you want to conquer a society, you must first subdue the man. So what does this mean? Is AI a tipping point where the masculine finally falls into the abyss, into some unrecoverable death spiral? Absolutely not.
Speaker 1:When we look at this technology and how we incorporate it into our lives, we see very, very clear steps to mastering it, to making sure that we understand and lead its control over the people that we care about most. It is a challenge to the masculine to step up, a challenge for us to go from passive living to active mastering this technology, active mastering the art of artificial intelligence. It means protecting our families from the bad parts and the people who weaponize this form of information, information sharing and gathering, and it also means that we educate ourselves so that we understand when those things are happening and we can take a leadership role for those around us and make sure that they stay safe and that AI serves us in our efforts to provide for those around us. Frankly, I'm excited about it. I think because this technology is so democratized that it allows us endless opportunity to step into our masculine roles, to allow us to take control, to allow us to be in charge of the way this is consumed and utilized by the people who matter most to us, and I don't mean to dictate it. I mean to ensure that it's being used for the betterment of us and our families.
Speaker 1:Those in our society who choose to be evil. We use that against our families, use that against our children, who are growing up with this in their pocket. That's a new challenge for us, a challenge we're not going to solve eating Fritos, sitting on a couch watching television while we scroll through Facebook. It's something we're going to have to be proactive and it's different than things in the past. It's not about building fires or campsites. It's not about constructing companies or even building buildings or fixing cars or building cars. This is something else. It's more nuanced than that, but presents the same opportunity for masculinity to thrive than anything else before in history. So I challenge you out there, the masculine in our society, to step up to that challenge, to see it as a powerful tool used by the benevolence found in the masculine, the strength, the leadership, the kindness, the gentle nature of the masculine.
Speaker 1:The other thing we need to view this as is it's not just something to master, it's not just something to safeguard against the bad parts of. It's an opportunity for us, as men to grow personally, role of technology and personal growth can be huge. I've asked, for example, some large language models, things about myself to help me understand my own thoughts. I don't take leadership from it, but I take advisement. I take advisement because what that large language model is referring to is collective human wisdom the records of us interfacing with technology for the last, however, many years since the internet's become popular. It's interesting to have that. What are other people thinking? What is a masculine approach to a problem? Maybe that you're facing with the technology itself? Do you take it as gospel? No, but do you take it as advisement?
Speaker 1:It's a huge opportunity, a huge opportunity. It's a way for us to learn. It's a way for us to share in the experience of others at light speed. We can use this. We can use this for personal growth, to make ourselves stronger and to make ourselves better. We talk about leadership in the home and workplace. There's a huge advantage when we talk about having access to this collective human wisdom. The advantage is that not only do we have access to it, but it'll do things for us. It'll limit the amount of time we spend doing redundant, mindless tasks. What that frees up for is time to work on ourselves, time for us to forge new connections within our family, connections we've neglected in the past because of our responsibilities. Even more important, when we utilize it in this way, we set ourselves up to be a better role model for the next generation, for our children and their children.
Speaker 1:Understanding this technology came along and there's a part of it that's dangerous. It's powerful. Anything powerful has an element of danger or threat, but when we set an example for others on the best way to use it, how we've utilized it to forge deeper connections, to be more present the people who matter most to us in our lives, we're setting an example. We're setting an example for future generations, but we're also setting an example for the people in the room while we do it. Let them see that this technology can be as benevolent as anything else created by people for the betterment of people. It's up to us, gentlemen, take that role and to be that example to our families, to the people that we work with, to the people that we lead and the people that lead us.
Speaker 1:A lot of the stigma around artificial intelligence is that it will replace people. The most obvious example is at work. Sure, and that will happen, but because of its ability to assist humanity, to lighten the load on our lives, it also simultaneously allows us for deeper connection with other people, rather than replace them. It's about that extra 30 minutes at a coffee shop with an old friend. It's that extra couple minutes sitting in the morning having breakfast with your children or listening to your wife about how her day went, and being more present, because the things that distract you in your life are being handled in a way that is very, very dependable. If we look at this this way, we behave in a way where this tool, this utility, sets us free, and the way that and the mechanism for our freedom is simply for us to be present, and more so than we ever have been before. It really speaks to our confidence. We can set an example for the balance between the time we spend interacting with technology and the time we spend being connected with other humans, with those who matter most.
Speaker 1:Another option, as the world accelerates, is our legacy. As men, legacy can be a huge, huge part of our existence. We long to leave a legacy. We want something left behind that's memorable, and memorable because it's beneficial to future generations, to the ones we leave behind and the ones that they create our children, our children's children and their children. Think of all the opportunity for that. If 10, 15, 20, 30% of your workload becomes automated in a way where you spend virtually no time dealing with, imagine taking that time and directing it, setting yourself free from the burden of its responsibility of redundant tasks and pointing that, and simply being present with those you love.
Speaker 1:Now how can you take the first step to become a leader in your family, your team and your community? The truth of the matter is, you probably already are to some level, but if you're interested in increasing that, if you're interested in having a more benevolent and powerful influence on those around you, protecting them, providing for them, taking a leadership role in your communities, the first thing we can do is get present with ourselves, have a clear understanding of our lives, where we are at right now and where we'd like that life to go, and then not be afraid of the steps to get there. You may need help to formulate those steps, and that's okay. That's where brotherhood comes in. That's where a sense of belonging, that's where time spent talking to our peers, gaining advice, comes in handy. In addition to that, having a conversation with ChatGPT can come in extremely handy. It's a perspective. You can ask it for a specific perspective and it will research that and deliver it to you.
Speaker 1:Like myself, I think many of us are intimidated at the idea or I was intimidated by the idea of this kind of intelligence coming from a machine. But I have learned quickly that this serves my role in my family, serves my role in this company, that it's an ally in my pursuit of my dreams and in me championing my goals. So I challenge you take another look. Take a look at your life, take a look at the things you do every day and realize how this can help. Think about that from a masculine perspective, and not only well. It'd make my life easier if I didn't have to respond to all these emails, or I didn't have to. You know completely and totally waste. You know two, three hours a day on these redundant tasks that are easily done by an artificial intelligence these days. What you would do at that time. Maybe you still work, or maybe you relax, or maybe you'd go home a little bit earlier than you used to. You surprise your wife with not only your presence, but also that your your sincerity. Show her that you've taken the time. Show your kids that you've taken time to utilize this incredible tool and that the benefit to you you're wanting and willing to share with them.
Speaker 1:This stuff will need to be directed. It'll need to be directed by powerful, benevolent people, both men and women, to ensure that it stays on track and continues to serve us as humans. That's the goal here. That's why we offer classes at TSG to talk about introductions to AI, to give people masses of people understanding of what this can do for them and how it can make our lives better. Anyway, check us out at TSG if you're interested in taking one of these courses, join our mailing list. The courses launch in February. Until then, I'm Adam Fierstein and this is the AF Podcast.
